Chapter seventeen
The Chinese informer waved his arms out at his sides, trying to avoid colliding into Chen Zhang, his chest and abdomen pitching forward.
Chen Zhang shoved the stick toward his supposed comrade and pressed it against the manâs neck.
The man immediately shook in place. Slight grunts leaving his mouth as the scent of burnt flesh filtered through the air.
Chen Zhang removed the baton and threw a swift left hook to the manâs cheek.
The American sympathizer swept backward, windmilling his arms until his spine and the back of his head slammed into the cell door, shutting it. The lock clicked home.
Amelia stood at the edge of the cell, startled by how viciously Chen Zhang had acted. Nevertheless, sheâd hoped for a way to run around the pair of men in front of her, but her captor had moved so quickly that she hadnât seen a pocket of space she could slip into in order to evade him.
When the cell door slammed, Amelia clutched onto the bars, and an image flashed behind her eyes.
The door Chen Zhang had just opened burst open. Jasmine stood in the doorway. Then the image vanished as quickly as it had arisen.
Amelia shook her head, shocked by the vision, followed by its abrupt disappearance. She backed away from the bars to reorient herself to her surroundings. It had been a while since sheâd taken advantage of her foresight, and she suspected that touching the exact spot that Chen Zhang had clutched earlier made all the difference. She should have actively attempted to do so in the past, but with so much going on of late, she overlooked the thought, determined to make use of it in the future.
Chen Zhang lowered the electrical rod with one hand and used the other to drag the traitor over to the gurney. When he got close enough, he placed the weapon on the soft surface and then grabbed a fistful of the American informerâs jacket. He hoisted the man off his feet as if he were no more than a life size blowup doll. The victim shriek in horror and anguish, but he made no attempt to fight back.
Amelia assumed his nerves were fried from getting electrocuted. His entire body trembled, and his set of keys jingled when they hit the floor, but Chen Zhang had moved so quickly and decisively that he hadnât even noticed the keys had fallen to the ground.
Chen Zhang removed a pocketknife from his pants, leveled it against the traitorâs neck, and slit his throat. As the wounded man kicked his legs and reached for his neck while releasing the last bit of air from his mouth, now gurgling as blood spilled onto his lab coat, the butcher tilted the gurney, so that the dying manâs neck tilted backward and toward the ground. Blood poured off the man and into the drain on the ground.
Amelia stared at the shocking event play out in front of her. She realized the man who had attempted to hurt her
